Quick Tip #87: Am I answering the question?
May 1, 2014
Have you ever been in the situation where you have reeled off an answer, only to come to the end and realised from the expression of bemusement on the face of the interviewer that you have gone off track completely? If you have then take heart from the fact that this happens to most people during the careers. Sometimes you get into the flow of an answer, paddling along merrily to the finish line, not realising you are actually heading over the edge of the waterfall.
Thankfully there is a simple way that you can avoid falling into this trap. As you are talking try to get into the habit of asking yourself at regular intervals:
“Am I answering the question?”
It’s a way of anchoring your answer to the question and will help you rein yourself in if you feel like you are waffling or giving an irrelevant answer. You will also be sure you are giving the interviewer the answer they are looking for.
